COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you have to be in engineering (ChemE specifically) to join?

Anyone from any school is welcome to join! We are primarily made up of students in the College of Engineering.

What’s the team culture like?

We have a big emphasis on teamwork. Nothing is ever done alone, and to adhere to lab safety, no research or development is ever done without help. We have a structure of many subteams so that we can all work together most efficiently.

What is a typical level of commitment?

Cornell ChemE Car understands each student’s committment to their academic coursework. We are also, however, a course on each member’s transcript that provides a letter grade. Because of this, we expect the level of committment to ChemE Car as one would put towards an accredited (3-credit) class.

What is ChemE Car?

We build a model car that we power and stop via chemical reactions. Our battery is made by a custom reaction, and we stop the car through an iodine clock reaction that senses the change in solution color.

Are you allowed to switch subteams?

Members are encouraged to stay with the subteam they are recruited for intially. However, if one’s interests shift to align with another team’s, accomodations to team members can be made.
